AIRCON WATER LEAK IN MALAYSIA

AIR CONDITIONER WATER LEAKS IN MALAYSIA

Air Conditioner Leaking Water in Malaysia? In KCOOL’s Experience, Around 90% of Cases Were Caused by a Blocked Drain Pipe

“Water is dripping from my air conditioner.”

“The floor underneath the unit is wet.”

“I had the air conditioner cleaned recently, but it is leaking again.”

These are problems that can occur when using air conditioners in Malaysia.

If an air conditioner is used for long enough, a water leak may eventually occur. The question is when.

Why does an air conditioner leak water? Here, KCOOL explains common causes and what to do, based on our experience attending water-leak cases.

The Most Common Cause KCOOL Finds: A Blocked Drain Pipe

In KCOOL’s experience, around 90% of the water-leak cases we have attended were caused by a blocked drain pipe. This figure reflects our own service experience; it is not a general industry-wide statistic.

We also often find that the inside of an air conditioner is quite dirty when we visit a home because of a leak.

It is easy to focus only on the result — a blocked drain pipe. But it is important to ask why the drain pipe became blocked in the first place.

Why Do Air Conditioner Drain Pipes Become Blocked?

When an air conditioner operates in cooling mode, condensation forms on the indoor unit’s heat exchanger (coil). This water collects in the drain pan and flows outside through the drain pipe.

However, the drain pipe can be narrower than your little finger.

As the air conditioner is used, dust and other dirt gradually build up inside the unit. They can mix with moisture and form sticky deposits that move towards the drainage system.

When gel-like dirt enters a pipe narrower than your little finger, it is not surprising that a blockage can occur.

What Is the Gel-Like Dirt Coming Out of an Air Conditioner?

At water-leak jobs, we sometimes find dark or semi-transparent, jelly-like deposits around the drain outlet or inside the drain pipe.

These deposits can form when dust and other dirt accumulated inside the air conditioner mix with moisture and become a slimy mass. Depending on the condition, microorganisms may also be involved. The deposits can obstruct the flow of drainage water.

When this dirt accumulates in the drainage path, water cannot flow out smoothly. Condensation water may then overflow from the drain pan and leak from the indoor unit.

Is Cleaning Only the Drain Pipe Enough to Stop the Leak?

Cleaning a blocked drain pipe can stop a leak temporarily in some cases.

However, if the work stops there, the leak may happen again. This is because dirt may still remain inside the air conditioner, including on the coil and in the drain pan — areas where the deposits can originate.

Even if the drain pipe itself is clean, remaining dirt inside the unit may flow back into the drainage path and block the pipe again.

Stopping the leak does not always mean the underlying cause has been removed.
It is important to check not only the blocked drain pipe, but also the dirt inside the air conditioner that may have contributed to the blockage.

Had It Just Been Cleaned, Yet It Is Leaking Again?

We sometimes hear comments such as, “The air conditioner was just cleaned, but it started leaking again after about two months.”

KCOOL has visited a home where the customer said another company had carried out a Chemical Cleaning around two months earlier, yet the unit was leaking again.

After hearing the customer’s account and inspecting the indoor unit, we found a considerable amount of black dirt still visible inside. At least in the areas we could see, it was difficult to say that the dirt had been thoroughly removed.

Of course, the visible condition alone cannot tell us exactly what work the previous company performed. However, if dirt remains inside the unit, it may enter the drainage path again and contribute to another blockage and water leak.

What matters in air conditioner cleaning is not simply that a cleaning service was performed, but whether the dirt has actually been removed properly.

A Blocked Drain Pipe Is Not the Only Possible Cause

Although drain-pipe blockages are common in KCOOL’s experience, other causes are possible, including:

  • A dirty or damaged drain pan: Dirt may accumulate in the water collection tray, or the tray may be damaged.
  • Drain pipe connection or slope problems: A loose connection or unsuitable slope may prevent proper drainage.
  • A frozen heat exchanger: Operating conditions, dirt or equipment faults may cause ice to form. Water may leak when it melts.
  • Pipe insulation problems: Deteriorated insulation can allow condensation to form around the pipework.

For this reason, the whole unit should be checked rather than looking only at the drain pipe.

KCOOL’s Water-Leak Service Is About More Than Just Stopping the Water

When KCOOL attends a water-leak case, our aim is not simply to clear a blocked drain pipe and stop the water.

We believe it is important to identify the dirt or blockage causing the leak and properly clean the areas that need attention.

The cause and required work depend on the condition of each air conditioner. That is why we believe it is important to inspect the inside of the unit, not just the place where the water is coming out.

A Water Leak Is Not Just a Yellow Warning Light

A leaking air conditioner is telling you that something is seriously wrong.

This is not a yellow warning. It is already a red warning.

We do not recommend continuing to use an air conditioner just because only a small amount of water is dripping. If you notice a leak, stop the unit and have the cause checked.

What Should You Do If Your Air Conditioner Starts Leaking?

  1. Stop operating the air conditioner.
  2. If water is near a power socket or electrical equipment, do not touch the wet area. Put safety first.
  3. If it is safe to do so, protect nearby furniture and flooring from water.
  4. If the leak continues, contact a qualified service provider and ask them to inspect both the drainage route and the inside of the unit.

Do not touch electrical components or wet wiring. Avoid restarting the unit before the cause is understood.

Pay Attention to Dirt Inside Air Conditioners in Malaysia

Air conditioners in Malaysia are often used throughout the year. How quickly dirt builds up depends on usage hours and the environment in each room.

In rooms where the air conditioner runs for long periods, or where dust easily enters, dirt may accumulate more quickly. It is worth checking the condition of the indoor unit regularly, before a water leak occurs.

Conclusion: Check the Cause of the Water Leak

One of the causes KCOOL most frequently encounters when attending water-leak cases is a blocked drain pipe.

The drain pipe is narrow, and gel-like dirt flowing from inside the air conditioner can accumulate and obstruct it.

Cleaning the pipe may stop the leak, but if dirt remains on the coil or in the drain pan, another blockage may occur.

Do not just stop the water leak — find and address the cause. This is the approach KCOOL values when handling water-leak problems.
